How To Regrow Lettuce From Stem

“Learn how to grow lettuce from stems is a great way to save your scraps instead of throwing them out. Just simply place in a bowl or jar and change the water daily to watch it grow.”

Peace Black Homesteader Fam!

Save money on constantly buying store bought lettuce from the grocery store, and use your kitchen scraps to grow lettuce at home.

Learning to grow lettuce from stem started as an fun experiment. I did not think it would work, but it did. Getting lettuce to grow in water might seem odd for your first time. I normally grow my food in potting soil, so I wondered if it would work for me.

Not only can you use this method for things like romaine lettuce, you can grow things like celery, sweet potatoes, and green onions. Make sure you change the water every day, and you can watch it grow back to maturity.

How To Regrow Lettuce From Stem

 The steps are as follows:

  1. Grab your leftover lettuce, cutting the leaves to about 1 inch from the bottom.
  2. Place the remaining stem in a dish filled with about an inch of water.
  3. Place near a windowsill or under grow lights.
  4. Change your water daily.

My best tip would be to use organic lettuce. The growing starts literally the next day. Halfway through, I had to change the container and remove extra leaves that were starting to spoil.

  • They were starting to turn yellow so I harvested them. I'm moving so I need a few days to get them ready to pickle. I'm kind of excited. I love pickles. Now I can say I grew these. Also mint and a jalapeno
